Palate Press: 2009 Syrah

by: Lane Giguiere

The Palate Press recommends our 2009 Matchbook Syrah in the online post on April 11, 2012:

2009 Matchbook

Dunnigan Hills Syrah

April 11, 2012 by Becky Sue Epstein

Five clones of estate-grown syrah are blended together to produce a wine full of nice, tarry fruit. Balanced by good acidity, this wine is hearty from nose through palate to finish. Yet it has a touch of florals throughout as well, which add both a hint of delicacy and another layer of complexity to the earthiness of this still-young wine. Pairs well with roasted meat and fried onion strings. Recommended. BSE.

WHO: Matchbook
WHAT: 91% syrah, 9% cabernet sauvignon
WHERE: Dunnigan Hills, California
WHEN: 2009
HOW MUCH: about $16

Yummy Chasing Venus

by: Lane Giguiere

The Palm Beach Post Swirl Girls feature Chasing Venus Sauvignon Blanc in their March 27, 2012, blog:

The 2011 Chasing Venus was a yummy, typical New Zealand sauv blanc, and that’s what I was looking for: a beautiful, aromatic nose of coconut and banana, with a taste of honeysuckle, pear and lime all rolled into a smoother, more unified wine.

This was crisp without being astringent and had a medium finish. With the paella, the wine had a green apple taste that was added to the mix, and this bigger sauvignon blanc went better with the dish than the other two. It’s also the least expensive, so it’s a true find.

March Malbec Madness

by: Lane Giguiere

Milwaukee Magazine wine columnist, Kristine Hansen, recommends Sawbuck Malbec on the publication’s online counterpart,

2008 Sawbuck Malbec (Yolo County, California, $10) has a damp, earthy bouquet that quickly evolves into toasty vanilla, oak and juicy blackberry notes, followed by a long finish. This Malbec goes down easy yet it’s also complex.”

Spring Forward with Rose

by: Lane Giguiere recommends our 2010 Matchbook Rose of Tempranillo for the spring season:

Matchbook Rosé of Tempranillo 2010 (Central Valley, CA) $11.  This wine screams “drink me outside” so it’s perfect as the weather gets warmer. It’s crisp and has hints of peaches and melon, which will of course make you think of what comes after spring: summer.

Tinto Rey Wine Pick of Week

by: Lane Giguiere

2007 Matchbook Tinto Rey is Wine Pick of the Week in the Arizona Daily Sun:

Matchbook 2007 red blend Tinto Rey, California ($17)

Wine is great fun because there’s always something new, as in this blend of mostly Tempranillo and Syrah. The “Red King” is a solid all-around wine, with full flavors, medium body, good complexity and acidity for food friendliness. Serve with red meats and red-sauced pasta.

Ask your favorite store to order this wine for you. Prices may vary.

— John Vankat, Daily Sun wine writer
