Hey, Sweets! Comfort Food Pairings for Valentine’s Day

by: Virginia Valdez Sandfer

The past year has been a challenge, to say the least! In the spirit of keeping things simple this Valentine’s Day, ditch the roses and fancy chocolates. Instead, gather an assortment of your favorite comfort foods like cookies, brownies, and cupcakes to pair with your favorite Matchbook wine.

Perfect Pairings:

Tip: For a healthier sweets option, try sliced Asian pears or an exotic fruit like Gooseberry.

Visit the bulk foods section of your local grocer to load up on cheeses, cured meats, roasted cashews, candied walnuts, or smokehouse almonds! Ask the store’s cheesemonger for suggestions if you’re having a hard time choosing.

 Award-Winning Pairings:

Tip: Our Tasting Room manager, Maureen, likes to add fig spread atop goat cheese for a quick cracker topping – it is to die for!

Get Fancy – Thinking Outside the Picnic Basket!

by: Virginia Valdez Sandfer

Matchbook Picnicking Guide: Tip #3

Picnics aren’t just for summer  – the same goes for oysters and a chilled bottle of Chasing Venus Marlborough, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc! Take our word for it, just last week the Matchbook team hosted a fun and festive, oyster shuck employee happy hour! Matchbook Sales Manager, Steve Crosta, took an early morning road trip to Hog Island Oysters to procure a couple of bushels of fresh oysters for the team. The afternoon was spent in the cool air, sipping on wine and throwing back the sweet and fresh taste of Amethyst and Kusshi oysters.

“The 2019 Chasing Venus Sauvignon Blanc has loads of what you expect from New Zealand – mild aromas and flavors of freshly cut grass coupled with a strong sense of kiwi fruit. Texture is classic, clean, crisp but with a richness and lingering finish you don’t often find with SBs from down under.”

– Steve Crosta, Sales Manager, Specialty & Export

We’ve been wowed by our guests who have been spotted picnicking at our tasting room with fresh oysters, caviar, Spanish paella, shrimp ceviche and sushi they brought in from local restaurants. We encourage you to think outside of the box and order your favorites to-go!

It’s Soup Season

by: Virginia Valdez Sandfer

Matchbook Picnicking Guide: Tip #2

This month we are celebrating SOUP Season!

Fill a thermos with a hearty soup, stew, or chili such as butternut squash soup or spicy turkey chili. Baguettes and crackers are easy to travel with – serve alongside your soup. Our go-to is a bowl of Aush Soup from House of Shah! This delicious, tomato-based soup is full of flavor. Made with noodles, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, dill, mint, yogurt, and seasoned ground beef, it pairs perfectly with our Tinto Rey Verdejo.

A picnic doesn’t always mean paper! Ditch the paper plates and opt for a decorative ceramic bowl and a wooden serving spoon.
