Rain or Shine – Yelpers Gonna Yelp!

by: Virginia Sandfer

On Sunday, May 26th, Hannah D., Yelp Community Manager (Davis) and 36 of the Yelp Elite Squad gathered at Matchbook for what they call a OYE (Official Yelp Event) and boy, did they have a good time despite the pesky rain.

“It was an uncharacteristically cold and rainy day in the valley, but a couple of sprinkles could not stop us from enjoying (a lot) of Vino and beautiful Vines scenery. And in case you ever wondered when those Yelp ponchos might come in handy, wonder no more.

Matchbook Winery is about 30-40 minutes away from Davis/Vacaville/Dixon area (depending which route you take), and about the same distance away from Sacramento. I have not heard of Matchbook before, but they have a wonderful property and make some tasty wines, and am so grateful to Yelp for making this discovery. Not only were we treated to a tour of the property, but we also got to taste their Chardonnay right off the tank. One of the owners, John, was our tour guide and was a wealth of knowledge. While I prefer craft beer to wine, I thoroughly enjoyed the detail of information provided. I’ve been to enough wineries and noticed that some winemakers like to get very exclusive with their presentations, but John was very on point and never sounded exclusive or preachy. We tasted 5 of the Matchbook Wines on the tour, and needles to say, I loved all of them.

The lunch from Mendocino Farms (another 1st for me), was tasty and complimented the wines perfectly. I also loved how they made sure there was something for everyone (vegan/vegetarian/gluten free). Along with Polaroid photo ops, taken personally by our CM, this was an event to remember.

If looking for that special place, not too far from Davis, look no farther than Matchbook Winery. Their tasting room is wonderful and the wines they make are some of the best in the area. Truly a Napa-like experience, without all the fuss. Thank you Hannah and Yelp for all the work you put into this one and thanks to Matchbook and all the staff for hospitality. Can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon and to come back and enjoy the scenery on a sunny day!”

Matchbook Tasting Room Events Take Center Stage!

by: Virginia Sandfer

The sound of twangy blues guitar, sassy vocals and the tip-tap of drums echoed over the Matchbook Vineyard as the Blues Dues American Roots band took center stage. The smell of fresh roasted Gilroy-grown garlic wafted from Andes Pizza truck oven while an Italian greeting was shouted out of the bustling Che Buono Food truck window – starting off the night with a bang.

Matchbook debuted its brand new, custom built stage on Friday, May 24th. The 24′ x 16′ stage was designed and built by Matchbook co-owner, Karl Giguiere. The stage rests at the bottom of the sloping green lawn that leads to the tasting room, with the backdrop of rolling hills and vines. Blues Dues rocked the stage playing the likes of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, along with plenty of original songs. Hambone Slim, the front man, wooed the crowd with his superb guitar playing skills and vocals. Hundreds of guests armed with bottles and glasses of wine enjoyed the view of the stage from the comfort of picnic blankets and chairs. The night came to a perfect end as the band finished their last song with the glowing orange sunset sinking behind them.

“What a beautiful event! We loved playing at Matchbook (as we always do) and this show was special because we had the honor of using their awesome professional outdoor amphitheater stage! As musicians, it is so great to have the right amount of space and lighting to let us create a top quality show. Matchbook is on our list of favorite venues to perform. The staff and patrons are always friendly and the vibe is the best! We can’t wait to come back!”
